44. The Violent Police Station
Ye Feng sat in the interrogation room with his eyes closed, conserving his energy. As soon as he got out of the car, he was locked directly into this room—it was clear enough that something was amiss. Nearly half an hour passed before anyone finally entered; the door swung open and in strode a policeman in uniform, without a cap, a cigarette dangling at an angle from his lips, his eyes glinting with malice as he glared at Ye Feng. He dragged a chair over, sat down right in front of Ye Feng, and Ye Feng found the whole situation rather amusing.
But staring at the policeman’s ferocious face, cigarette in his mouth, plopping down opposite with a cold, sidelong glance, Ye Feng soon lost interest. He just hoped Xu Wen would arrive soon—after all, who knew what could happen here.
Still, Ye Feng did not feel afraid. He’d heard stories of the dark dealings inside the police station, how many people had been roughed up terribly—just like last time. But Ye Feng was no ordinary person. Not to mention his own abilities, escaping would be no problem; and the name Luo Ming carried weight in Seabreeze City—most issues could be resolved with it. In cases of brawling and fighting, as long as no one died, it wasn’t a big deal.
From the look of things, this policeman intended to exploit his authority to pin something on him—but that suited Ye Feng just fine...
“You’ve got some nerve, kid, committing violence in public…” The policeman across from him looked at Ye Feng, who sat there without a trace of fear, even wearing a hint of indifference and, it seemed, a touch of mockery. This only made him more annoyed.
No one who’d ever come in here behaved like this, at least not in Captain Wang Bazhua’s memory. No one had ever managed to be so calm—truly calm, not just putting on a brave face. Let alone with such a disdainful, mocking look. It was as if he didn’t take Wang seriously at all.
Wang Bazhua slammed his palm on the table, his face cold as he growled.
Ye Feng, seeing the flash of menace in the man’s eyes, thought to himself that the show was about to begin. Surely, the cop wouldn’t really dare to hit him? If he did, that would make things interesting. He couldn’t help but retort sarcastically, “I’ve never been particularly bold. But with a clear conscience, what’s there to fear? I’m curious, though—what reason did you have to drag me here across jurisdictions? Just because I defended myself against a few thugs?”
“What reason?” Wang Bazhua recalled the benefits promised by Young Master Bai, and a cruel glint flashed in his eyes as he said coldly, “Intentional injury. Didn’t you know?”
“Intentional injury?” Ye Feng’s lips curled in scorn. So a simple act of self-defense against a few punks could be twisted into such a charge? He sneered, “You really have the gall to turn truth on its head. Is there any law left in this place?”
Seeing Ye Feng’s disdainful sneer, Wang Bazhua thought, “Let’s see how long you can keep laughing!” His gaze grew colder, and he suddenly swung at Ye Feng with a slap.
But Ye Feng’s reflexes were far beyond Wang Bazhua’s estimation. What seemed lightning-fast to others appeared to Ye Feng as though in slow motion; he dodged easily.
The fact that Ye Feng so effortlessly avoided his slap made Wang Bazhua’s eyes flicker with menace. He had brought Ye Feng in today to vent Bai Weiqi’s anger. When his men reported that the kid had been captured, he thought it would be simple—most people wouldn’t dare fight back inside the station. He could just find an excuse to beat him up and lock him up for a few weeks. He’d even informed Bai Weiqi in advance, congratulating him. If he couldn’t handle this, it would be a problem—not only would he not get paid, but even his job might be at risk.
Yet this kid dared to act so insolent on his turf.
Wang Bazhua had been captain for two years. He’d done many shady things but never had any trouble—he owed it to his caution. He’d checked Ye Feng’s background before making a move. Naturally, Ye Feng had no connections as powerful as Young Master Bai’s, and with Bai as his backer, Wang had nothing to fear.
So, before targeting Ye Feng, he’d already investigated everything through the station’s system, then plotted with the Axe Gang’s second-in-command to bring the kid in, planning to use the charge of “intentional injury” as an excuse to teach him a lesson. Things had been a bit complicated, but in the end, the kid was in his hands.
Having missed with his slap, Wang Bazhua’s anger flared, and he swung again.
This time, Ye Feng didn’t bother to be polite. He chopped Wang’s wrist with a knife-hand strike, instantly numbing the man’s hand.
Wang Bazhua clutched his wrist, his face still twisted in malice. Ye Feng found it all rather dull. Clearly, this wasn’t the first time this man had done such things. Did they never consider the consequences beforehand? Were they not afraid of hitting the wrong person?
Wang Bazhua stared at Ye Feng in a mixture of ferocity and shock, then burst out in an angry laugh. “Don’t think you’ll get away just because you know a few moves. If I don’t beat you until you’re begging on your knees today, my name isn’t Wang!”
With that, Wang Bazhua turned and yanked a police baton from behind the door, grinning coldly as he advanced on Ye Feng. “Originally, I planned to knock out a few of your teeth, let you rot in the holding cell for half a month, and then let you go. But now, I see I can’t let you off so lightly. I’ll make sure you remember that your grandpa’s surname is Wang!”
Ye Feng watched him approach, baton in hand, and sighed, “You really treat this place like your own home. This is a police station—a law enforcement institution. Isn’t your arrogance a bit much?”
Seeing Ye Feng’s look of resignation, Wang Bazhua thought he’d finally scared him. He pointed at Ye Feng with a sneer, “Listen up, kid—at home, maybe what I say doesn’t count. But here, I’m the law. Even if I beat you to death in here, no one would dare say a word. You’re dead meat!”
Too bad Wang Bazhua didn’t notice that Ye Feng, far from being afraid, looked almost exhilarated. Now he could give this thug a real lesson. Judging by his words, this wasn’t the first time he’d done something like this. Today, Ye Feng could consider himself an agent of justice; if he didn’t deal with this man, who knew how many innocents would suffer here in the future.
As long as he didn’t kill him, it would be self-defense. Even if he did, it would hardly matter—Wang Bazhua clearly had no real connections, or he wouldn’t just be swaggering around in a minor post like this.
Still, Ye Feng hoped Xu Wen would arrive soon, or things might get complicated.
