48. The Major Case (Part Two)
“It looks like you won’t have a chance to play with guns anymore,” Ye Feng sneered, making a mocking remark before delivering a swift kick to Zhao Kunqiang’s beer belly, sending him flying across the room.
Wailing sirens echoed from outside.
At the sound of police sirens, the armed men inside instantly grew tense. After all, they were members of a criminal organization, sworn enemies of the police, and carrying firearms—a grave offense in China.
“Relax, no need to worry. They’re all my people,” Ye Feng said with a carefree smile, exuding confidence as if the situation was already under his control.
Hearing this, the armed men calmed down. Up to now, they still believed Ye Feng was Han Xin’s trusted confidant, so they quickly suppressed their fear, strode to the door, and opened it.
As soon as the door swung open, Xu Wen and his team of officers surged in. He hurriedly looked at Ye Feng, asking, “Are you alright, Young Master Ye?”
“I’m fine, but you’ve got work to do,” Ye Feng replied with a smile.
Seeing Ye Feng chatting amiably with the leader, the armed men who had been on edge relaxed further.
“Alright, gentlemen, put your guns on the table and squat by the wall. Cooperate with the police for their investigation,” Ye Feng instructed with a smile.
The armed men obeyed without protest, now treating Ye Feng as Han Xin’s replacement and taking his words as Han Xin’s orders. One by one, they placed their pistols on the table and moved to squat by the wall.
Xu Wen was stunned when he saw so many guns and, upon closer inspection, realized that someone had been killed. He wondered what on earth had happened.
Just then, Ye Feng called out, “Brother Xu, aren’t you going to have your men collect the guns?” Outwardly, Ye Feng gave Xu Wen face, knowing that otherwise his subordinates might spread rumors.
Prompted by Ye Feng, Xu Wen quickly ordered all the firearms to be collected, making sure none were missed. Once every weapon was accounted for, Ye Feng said, “Director Xu, congratulations! You’re about to be promoted. You’ve just busted a major criminal organization—surely you’ll be moving up.”
Ye Feng’s remark made Xu Wen realize this was the master’s arrangement. He exhaled deeply, then was overcome with joy, knowing his benefactor was paving the way for him. But in front of his subordinates, he kept his composure and asked, “Young Master Ye, what happened here?”
“I’m not entirely sure myself. I rescued a girl, then they started fighting among themselves. I called the police, and you came,” Ye Feng explained succinctly. Xu Wen listened and, though he didn’t fully grasp the situation, nodded. These formalities were for the benefit of the subordinates—Ye Feng understood, and so did Xu Wen.
However, the men squatting by the wall understood perfectly. One of them, bold enough, stood up and shouted, “Who are you? Where’s our boss?”
“I told you, I’m just an ordinary student!” Ye Feng shrugged, annoyed. “Why don’t you take a bullet to the forehead and see if you survive?”
“You’re lying to us?” The man couldn’t accept it.
Before he could vent his anger completely, a nearby police officer slapped him hard across the face, his teeth and blood spraying out, silencing him for good.
“I never said I was one of you. That’s just your own assumption,” Ye Feng laughed.
That night, Ye Feng returned to the Southern District Bureau, this time riding in Xu Wen’s official car, with Xu Wen himself behind the wheel.
On the way, Ye Feng asked Xu Wen seriously, “Are you willing to become my loyal dog?”
“Yes, yes, I am,” Xu Wen replied without hesitation.
After a mischievous scan, Ye Feng confirmed Xu Wen was telling the truth.
“Good. Then prepare for promotion and wealth,” Ye Feng said with a smile.
Arriving at the familiar Southern District Bureau, Ye Feng sat in the familiar director’s office for a while, drank hot tea, gave his statement, and then left.
Meanwhile, the Southern District Bureau launched a sudden investigation and, later that night, reported directly to the Provincial Public Security Department. The provincial authorities sent a team to join forces with the Southern District Bureau officers, wiping out Han Xin’s criminal syndicate, which had plagued Haifeng City for years. They even apprehended Xiao Qiang, the boss of the Xiao gang, who was in the midst of robbing his rivals.
After tonight, Xu Wen, the commander of this anti-crime operation, would surely see a meteoric rise. Years ago, Wang Datong had secured the position of city bureau chief by breaking up a student-led criminal group. Now, Xu Wen had destroyed a gang that had tormented Haifeng City for a decade. This achievement was almost equal to the sum of all Wu Fanzhi’s lifetime accomplishments.
Exhausted from the day, Ye Feng went home and collapsed into bed. There was no training that night, so he slept deeply, only waking when the phone rang. Groggy, he looked at his phone—Wang Datong was calling.
“Now, let’s see if he knows how things work,” Ye Feng muttered, letting Mischief connect the call.
“Ye, you really don’t play fair, do you?” Wang Datong complained, his tone displeased but not outright angry, probably for Luo Ming’s sake.
“Uncle Wang, what do you mean? I don’t understand,” Ye Feng replied, feigning ignorance.
“Why didn’t you call me yesterday? That kind of thing should have been handled by me! I’d have been happy just to get a taste of the action. Now Xu Wen is about to overshadow me, and I can only watch helplessly,” Wang Datong said, jealousy dripping from his words.
Ye Feng listened and realized Wang Datong was indeed out of the loop, jealous of Xu Wen’s sudden success. Since Wang Datong was so clueless, Ye Feng decided not to hold back.
“Well, I didn’t mean to. I was startled at the time and just dialed the first number that came to mind,” Ye Feng pretended to suddenly understand. “Besides, surely you don’t lack opportunities like this, Director Wang. I don’t need to reserve special cases for you.” Ye Feng no longer called him Uncle Wang, but Wang Datong, though Wang Datong, lost in his own grievances, didn’t notice the change in Ye Feng’s tone.
Wang Datong exclaimed, “The news is exploding! How can you say it’s not a big deal?”
“Exploding news?” Ye Feng was surprised. It seemed Xu Wen was more capable than he’d thought—not just a useless puppet. He scoffed, “It’s just a few gangsters caught. Is it really that dramatic?”
“This is a crackdown! Xu Wen uprooted a criminal gang that had plagued Haifeng City for years, seized so many guns, arrested so many people, found over a thousand kilograms of drugs, and even nabbed the Xiao gang’s boss. Of course it made national headlines! This is a model case for anti-crime efforts! Since the founding of the nation, there haven’t been many cases bigger than this—how could it not cause a sensation?” Wang Datong sighed, full of envy. “Looks like Xu Wen is definitely getting promoted.”
“Oh!” Ye Feng nodded. He hadn’t expected such a small move to have such a tremendous impact. Xu Wen would surely be overjoyed. Without Ye Feng, he would never have achieved such a feat.
“Ye, I heard you orchestrated everything yesterday. Xu Wen just led the team to clean up the mess,” Wang Datong complained. “You should have called me! With your ties to the Luo family, I’d certainly have helped you.”
