Chapter 96: The Interrogation
After the attending physician finished giving a few more instructions, he finally left the room. Now only Madam Shen and Jiang Yunzhu remained.
Worried that Madam Shen would let her thoughts run wild again, Jiang Yunzhu kept chatting, trying to distract her with other topics. Yet Madam Shen remained silent, refusing to acknowledge Jiang Yunzhu in any way. No matter how much Jiang Yunzhu talked—her mouth dry and her tongue parched—she could not get a single word from the old lady.
“Grandmother, are you in pain?” she asked, wondering if the wound was hurting and thinking she should fetch the doctor for some pain relief.
Just as she stood up, she heard Madam Shen’s accusatory voice. “Was the trending news online your doing?”
Jiang Yunzhu paused, turning stiffly to face her, a trace of guilt in her eyes. “Grandmother…”
Seeing this, disappointment deepened in Madam Shen’s gaze. “You two are already married. Why can’t you just let the past go and live peacefully? Must you make everything public, humiliating Shen Ruizhang in front of the whole country, and—” She broke off, clutching her chest in pain, her face growing even paler, her breathing becoming labored.
Terrified, Jiang Yunzhu tried to comfort her. “Grandmother, please don’t get upset! Don’t overthink things—your health is what matters!”
Madam Shen’s body began to tremble uncontrollably. Jiang Yunzhu’s eyes reddened with fear. The attending physician, alerted by the commotion, rushed in and administered a sedative.
Only then did Madam Shen fall asleep.
The doctor, clearly displeased, scolded her. “Didn’t I warn you not to upset her again? Her body can no longer withstand such agitation. More stress and repeated surgeries will only hasten her death.”
Tears streamed down Jiang Yunzhu’s face, her eyes swollen and red. “I understand. I won’t upset my grandmother again.”
“You’d better not. Take care of the patient’s emotions,” the doctor admonished before leaving, shaking his head.
Jiang Yunzhu hung her head, anxiety written all over her face as she gazed at Madam Shen lying in bed.
“Grandmother, you must get through this safely. Nothing can happen to you—I can’t lose you!”
She stayed by Madam Shen’s side until she was about to wake up, then slipped away, afraid that her presence might agitate the old lady again.
Stepping out of the hospital, she immediately spotted the Maybach parked at the entrance. Jiang Yunzhu didn’t think much of it until the window rolled down, revealing Shen Tingxiao’s face.
Jiang Yunzhu frowned. “How did you know I was here?”
“I called you countless times, then went to your house but you weren’t there. So I came to the hospital in hopes of finding you.”
Seeing how pale Jiang Yunzhu looked, Shen Tingxiao’s heart ached. “You haven’t slept all night, have you?”
“How could I sleep when something’s happened to Grandmother?”
His expression darkened. Pulling her into the car, he took her straight home and insisted she get some rest.
She was indeed exhausted, so she closed her eyes, but before sleeping, she asked someone to investigate who was behind the trending news online.
When she woke, the tantalizing aroma of food filled the air. She walked out of the room to find Shen Tingxiao cooking in the kitchen.
Her spirits lifted.
“You’re awake?” he asked.
Jiang Yunzhu walked up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist. “Anything is fine, you don’t have to go to so much trouble.”
“How could I let you just have anything when you’re with me? I want to feed you well and plump you up.”
She couldn’t help but laugh. “If I really gain weight, you might not like me anymore.”
“Impossible. Whether you’re thin or chubby, I’ll always like you.”
After the meal, Jiang Yunzhu prepared to send Shen Tingxiao away.
“Where are you going?” he asked, frowning as if sensing she was about to leave.
“I have something to take care of at the company,” she replied.
His brow relaxed slightly. “Need my help?”
“No, it shouldn’t be hard to handle. I’ll go first.”
He picked up his car keys, following her. “I’ll drive you.”
She hesitated, but agreed.
After he dropped her at the company entrance and drove away, Jiang Yunzhu immediately changed direction and headed for the police station.
When she saw the weary, haggard Shen Ruizhang, her feelings were complicated.
“Uncle, what’s going on at the company? Did you really evade taxes?”
Shen Ruizhang clenched his jaw, clearly furious. “Yunzhu, there’s a traitor in the company. Someone embezzled project funds and falsified the accounts!”
Jiang Yunzhu grew grave. “How much is missing?”
He pressed his lips together and told her the amount. Her pupils contracted sharply. “How could it be so much?”
He hadn’t expected someone to be so bold, but what was done was done—there was nothing more to say.
Jiang Yunzhu took a deep breath. “I’ll figure something out. Give me a few days.”
He looked at her, unable to help but ask, “Yunzhu, can you get the trending news taken down?”
She hesitated, then replied helplessly, “I didn’t put it up there.”
His expression changed instantly. “It wasn’t you?”
“If you don’t believe me, there’s nothing I can do. But at a time like this, why are you worrying about some online rumor? Shouldn’t you be concerned about yourself?”
The amount of money was so large, she couldn’t possibly scrape it together at once, yet here he was still preoccupied with that woman.
Shen Ruizhang’s face darkened further. Suddenly, he blurted out a name: “Shen Tingxiao! I bet he’s behind this.”
“Uncle!”
“I tried to suppress the trending topic but couldn’t. Who else could be manipulating things behind the scenes but Shen Tingxiao?”
Jiang Yunzhu had no patience for this. “Don’t jump to conclusions without evidence!”
She didn’t trust him—after all the times he’d wrongly accused her, her faith in him was long gone.
“Believe me! If you won’t, investigate Shen Tingxiao yourself. Even if he didn’t do it, he’s certainly involved somehow!”
Jiang Yunzhu ignored his words and left the police station without looking back. Still, his suspicions echoed in her mind. She picked up her phone and sent a message.
Ge Xingjing entered the president’s office, documents in hand. “Sir, here’s what you asked for—”
Before he could finish, an angry voice resounded.
“Shen Tingxiao!”
Shen Tingxiao looked up to see Jiang Yunzhu striding in, fury written all over her face.
Ge Xingjing, sensing the tension, slipped out and quietly closed the door behind him.
“Did you have a hand in my uncle being taken away? Do you realize you almost killed my grandmother?”
Shen Tingxiao frowned. “Yunzhu, calm down. Let’s talk this through.”
