Chapter 105: The Terms
Jiang Yunzhu paced in confusion at the entrance of the private detective agency, circling a few times and peering through the glass inside.
There was nothing inside, only chaos—an unsettling sight that made her anxious.
Just then, someone happened to walk by on the street. She hurriedly caught the passerby and asked, “Do you know what happened to this detective agency?”
The passerby shook his head. “I’m not sure, but there was quite a commotion here last night. Today, it seems to be closed.”
Jiang Yunzhu’s gaze flickered. She quickly thanked him, noticed that the shop next door was open, and went over to inquire.
“Hello, do you know why the detective agency next door closed?”
The shop owner sized her up, her expression complicated. She opened her mouth, then looked nervous.
“Miss, why are you asking about this?”
Jiang Yunzhu smiled gently. “Well, I asked that agency to investigate something for me. I was supposed to get the results today, but I didn’t see anyone here. Since I paid so much, I’m worried I’ve been scammed.”
The shop owner finally understood and shook her head.
“You’d better stay away from here for a while. No one knows whom the agency offended, but last night there was a huge commotion—seemed like some gangsters showed up.”
Jiang Yunzhu’s eyes flickered again, her expression darkening. After thanking the shop owner, she hurried back to her company.
At the entrance, she found a package waiting for her.
She had no idea who had left it on the desk.
Jiang Yunzhu glanced at the exquisitely wrapped box, feeling no desire to open it.
“Jiang, this might be another threat!”
Jiang Yunzhu snorted coldly. “These people only know how to use such tricks!”
Nevertheless, she opened the box. When she saw what was inside, she was so startled that she flung it away.
Its contents spilled onto the floor.
Everyone in the office saw it immediately.
Screams broke out.
“What is that? It looks like it’s bloody!”
Jiang Yunzhu’s face turned pale as she stared fixedly at the bloodstained finger on the floor.
Her lips, drained of color, pressed tightly together.
“This is a threat! I never expected that director to have such a powerful background! We only wanted to investigate, and now we’re receiving intimidation letters!”
Those who had previously received threats grew even paler.
“Jiang, what should we do? We got threats too. Are they going to cut off our fingers?”
After this, fear spread among the others.
“Call the police! We need to call the police!”
Snapping out of her daze, Jiang Yunzhu immediately dialed 110.
The police arrived quickly to investigate, but their efficiency was slow.
Jiang Yunzhu waited all day, then went to the station to ask for results the next morning.
But the police only gave her vague answers.
She realized someone was suppressing the case. The thought left her even more distraught.
Wiping her face, she returned home in silence.
That night, she received a phone call.
The moment she heard the voice on the other end, a hint of hope flickered in her heart.
“Liu Mo! Did you uncover any evidence? What’s going on?”
Liu Mo’s tone was stiff. “Miss Jiang, we won’t be investigating for you this time. The losses on our side are too severe. No matter how much money you offer, we can’t continue.”
Jiang Yunzhu, embarrassed and angry, pressed, “What happened? At least give me an answer.”
“Miss Jiang, I told you before—the director’s connections run deep. If you insist on investigating, you must be mentally prepared.”
“Besides, one of my people lost a finger during the investigation.”
Jiang Yunzhu froze, and silence fell between them.
She sighed heavily. “I’m sorry. For your colleague who lost his finger, I’ll offer some compensation. Thank you for your effort.”
Liu Mo finally breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this.
“Alright, I’ll let him know. Miss Jiang, you should be careful. That person has already noticed you’re looking into him.”
Jiang Yunzhu had expected as much. After Liu Mo’s warning, she smiled faintly.
“I understand.”
After hanging up, Jiang Yunzhu slumped into her chair, exhausted.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw that bloodied finger.
She hurried to wash her face with cold water, feeling somewhat better afterward.
In the quiet room, her phone suddenly rang.
Startled, Jiang Yunzhu screamed, her heart pounding wildly.
With trembling hands, she grabbed the phone from beside her pillow.
“Hello?”
The person on the other end, hearing her shaky voice, asked in confusion, “What’s wrong with your voice?”
Jiang Yunzhu didn’t want anyone to know what was happening to her. She replied coldly, “Uncle, what do you want?”
Shen Ruizhang spoke in a low voice, “I heard you’re in trouble lately. I wanted to let you know that I can help.”
Jiang Yunzhu narrowed her eyes. “Where did you hear that?”
“Don’t worry about where I heard it. The point is, I can help you. Don’t worry, there aren’t any big conditions.”
Jiang Yunzhu didn’t believe him. Shen Ruizhang had long lost her trust.
“What do you want me to do?”
Of course, she didn’t believe he’d help without asking for something in return.
“I just want you to spend one night with me. How about it?”
Jiang Yunzhu’s face darkened instantly. “Uncle, have you forgotten our relationship?”
“I haven’t forgotten. We’re husband and wife now. Isn’t it natural for spouses to stay together? Besides, I’m only asking you to spend one night with me.”
Jiang Yunzhu sneered, baffled at how he could say such things.
“If that’s what it takes for you to help, then I’d rather solve it myself!”
On the other end, Shen Ruizhang gripped his phone tightly, his expression ugly.
“I know your company received several threats. Do you really think you can handle this alone, given your abilities and status?”
He seemed to realize his tone was too harsh and softened it. “There’s no need for us to be so distant. It’s only right for me to help you.”
Jiang Yunzhu laughed coldly. “Since you’ve already set conditions, it’s hardly a matter of duty. I told you, I won’t look back.”
With that, she hung up.
She would never spend the night with him. She wasn’t that cheap!
