Chapter Ninety-Two: Misunderstandings of Many Years Resolved
As Jiang Yunzhu approached, she realized the furtive figure was Liu Mo.
She narrowed her eyes. “What are you doing here? Is there something you can’t contact me about by phone?”
He’d come all the way to the company.
Liu Mo looked resigned. “Miss Jiang, I had no other choice.”
Jiang Yunzhu cut him off before he could finish. Liu Mo immediately closed his mouth, took a stack of documents from his bag, and handed them to her, then slipped away quietly.
Jiang Yunzhu entered the company with the documents, not having time to look at them yet, when she saw a message from Shen Ruizhang pop up on her phone.
Her expression darkened further, and she ignored it.
She had just finished reading the materials Liu Mo had compiled when Shen Ruizhang appeared.
“Yunzhou.”
She set the documents down before looking at him. “Uncle, is there something urgent you need?”
Shen Ruizhang pressed his lips together, his face a little tense, his tone carrying a hint of reproach. “I messaged you earlier—did you not see it?”
Feigning distraction, Jiang Yunzhu picked up her phone and glanced at it. “I was busy just now and didn’t have time.”
He suppressed his discomfort and said, “Yunzhou, everything concerning Zhou Qingfei has been clarified; she had nothing to do with it.”
Jiang Yunzhu raised an eyebrow. “Since it has nothing to do with her, why are you telling me this?”
Shen Ruizhang hesitated, but continued, “The police won’t release her. I want you to go there.”
He seemed to fear she’d be angry and hastened to explain, “She’s pregnant, and her health isn’t good. I’m afraid she can’t cope with being in the police station.”
Jiang Yunzhu looked at him coolly. She’d lost count of how many times he’d pleaded on Zhou Qingfei’s behalf.
“Is that her request, or your idea?”
He fell silent for a moment before replying, “I went to see her. She’s not in a good state.”
Jiang Yunzhu gave a brief smile. “Or is it because she’s done something guilty and is afraid?”
Shen Ruizhang shook his head in disapproval. “Yunzhou, whatever the grievances, she’s still pregnant. I hope you can show her some compassion and understanding. Whatever her faults, the child is innocent.”
Jiang Yunzhu’s laugh was cold; she found herself incapable of any forbearance and felt even more indignant toward him.
She handed him the documents she had just received.
“You should take a good look. You ought to know what Miss Zhou has done.”
Shen Ruizhang hesitated, frowning, but still accepted the documents. When he saw what was inside, he froze.
“This, this…”
He was stunned by the contents, his heart struck as if by lightning, and in an instant, his face turned deathly pale.
That incident years ago—the hazy, drunken night that had caused five years of estrangement with Yunzhou—had been orchestrated by Zhou Qingfei?
How could that be? Wasn’t she supposed to be abroad at the time? But the evidence before him was irrefutable.
Jiang Yunzhu crossed her arms, watching him closely, missing none of the expressions flickering across his face.
“You don’t believe it?”
He didn’t answer, but his hand trembled involuntarily.
“If you don’t believe me, you can investigate yourself.”
“No need, I… I believe you.”
Jiang Yunzhu gave a short, scornful laugh. “Uncle, your expression doesn’t look much like belief.”
He collected himself, forcing his features into an apologetic look.
“Yunzhou, I didn’t know she was the one behind it. All these years, I wrongly accused you.”
Hearing his apology, Jiang Yunzhu’s heart remained unmoved, as placid as still water. If he’d said this earlier, perhaps she might have forgiven him.
“In your eyes, I was someone with base intentions, ruthless and scheming. Back then, no matter how much I tried to explain, you didn’t even investigate—just condemned me outright.”
His face was wretched, and he could only muster a strained smile.
“I was so shocked then; my mind was a mess, I—”
She cut him off. “Uncle, now that you know it was Miss Zhou who drugged you five years ago, what do you plan to do?”
His gaze faltered, full of guilt as he looked at her.
“Yunzhou, I’ve wronged you and hurt you, I…”
Jiang Yunzhu’s face darkened.
She only wanted to know: now that he realized Zhou Qingfei had set her up, what would he do?
“Uncle, I just want to know what you’ll do about Miss Zhou. After all, I bore the blame for her all these years, and she’s never missed a chance to humiliate me. You, too, did your share back then.”
She could never forget the hurt he’d caused her—how could she not care?
The one she’d loved wholeheartedly had believed Zhou Qingfei and publicly insulted her online.
She would never forget.
Shen Ruizhang was wounded by the look in her eyes. Reading the list of Zhou Qingfei’s past deeds, even though he’d prepared himself, he was still shocked.
So Zhou Qingfei had never been as innocent and kind as he’d thought.
And he himself had done so much to hurt Yunzhou.
A wave of guilt overwhelmed him. He looked at Jiang Yunzhu with deep regret.
It seemed every time something happened with Zhou Qingfei, he’d suspected Yunzhou first.
She had grown up by his side, and yet as her uncle, he had never trusted her.
Time and again, he’d pushed her into the eye of the storm.
He’d even said so many hurtful things to her just to appease Zhou Qingfei.
At this thought, Shen Ruizhang wished he could slap himself.
“It was my fault. I apologize. From now on, let’s live well together. I’ll never hurt you for someone else again.”
Jiang Yunzhu’s smile was faint and cold. “Uncle, there’s no need to change the subject. You still don’t intend to do anything about Miss Zhou, do you?”
He met her emotionless gaze and felt a sharp pain in his heart.
He couldn’t bear to see those beautiful eyes look at him with such unfamiliarity.
“She’s pregnant. No matter what, we should wait until the child is born. The child is innocent.”
Jiang Yunzhu sneered. “You’re so sure that Miss Zhou is really pregnant?”
Shen Ruizhang frowned slightly. “Yunzhou, I know Zhou Qingfei has wronged you and hurt you, but faking a pregnancy? I doubt she’d dare. Besides, such a lie would be exposed before long.”
Jiang Yunzhu pressed her lips together. She cared nothing for the child in Zhou Qingfei’s belly. With a mother like her, that child would hardly have a good life—better not to be born at all.
“Uncle, you really do care about Miss Zhou. No matter how vicious she is, you’re devoted to her. Sometimes, I almost envy her for being the one you’re so loyal to.”
Seeing the loathing in her eyes, Shen Ruizhang felt as if a needle had pierced his heart.
“Yunzhou, it’s not what you think. The one I love is—” you.
