Chapter Ninety-Five: Lady Shen's Suspicion
After the entertainment news about Zhou Qingfei broke out online, it sent all her fans and countless bystanders into an uproar. Not long after, the sheer influx of people caused the network to crash.
When Shen Ruizhang’s assistant noticed the news about Zhou Qingfei spreading online, he immediately called in the PR team to handle the crisis, then hurried to contact Shen Ruizhang.
“President Shen, I don’t know which reporter posted Miss Zhou’s story on the internet, but a lot of people are cursing her.”
Shen Ruizhang massaged his brow in frustration upon hearing this. “Get those reports off the internet at once!”
“The PR team is already on it, but…”
Shen Ruizhang’s expression darkened. “What’s the problem?”
“We don’t know who’s interfering, but the trending topic just won’t go down.”
A deep frown creased Shen Ruizhang’s forehead; a certain person immediately came to mind, and his face grew even grimmer.
“Find someone, anyone—get that trending topic suppressed by any means necessary.”
“Yes, sir!”
As soon as the call ended, Shen Ruizhang dialed Jiang Yunzhu’s number.
Jiang Yunzhu had already seen the trending topic online and the barrage of insults directed at Zhou Qingfei. It put her in a considerably better mood.
So when Shen Ruizhang called, she answered without hesitation.
“Was the trending topic about Zhou Qingfei your doing?”
Jiang Yunzhu’s face turned cold. “Did you have someone look into it?”
Shen Ruizhang’s tone was low. “Yunzhu, are you trying to drive Zhou Qingfei to ruin? Let her go. She’s pregnant—there’s no need to treat her like this. She’s already been punished enough.”
A cold smile flickered in Jiang Yunzhu’s heart. “If that’s what this call is about, then we have nothing further to discuss.”
She ended the call without a second thought.
“Yunzhu!” Shen Ruizhang’s voice was abruptly cut off.
After hanging up, Jiang Yunzhu quickly called Liu Mo.
“Miss Jiang, how can I help you?”
“Did you orchestrate that trending topic about Zhou Qingfei?”
Liu Mo was momentarily surprised and hurried to deny it. “You never said to make it public, so I didn’t do anything.”
“It wasn’t you?”
Jiang Yunzhu grew even more puzzled.
“Wasn’t it you who started it, Miss Jiang?” After all, he had handed over all the gathered information to her, and he’d assumed she had begun taking her revenge on Zhou Qingfei.
“Never mind, I’ll hang up now.” Jiang Yunzhu pressed her lips together, suspicion gnawing at her. Had Zhou Qingfei offended someone else besides herself?
After a moment’s thought, she set the matter aside. She was more than happy to watch Zhou Qingfei suffer.
Days passed, but Zhou Qingfei’s scandal remained at the top of the trending topics. Some curious netizens even dug up more about her, unearthing all sorts of things she and Shen Ruizhang had done together.
Shen Tingxiao was seething with rage. “It’s been so long—what is PR even doing? They still haven’t taken it down? Am I paying a bunch of freeloaders?”
His assistant kept silent. The PR team had been working overtime for days, but the storm only intensified, and the trending topic wouldn’t budge. Even Shen Corporation was starting to feel the impact; in just a few days, their stock had dropped significantly. If this continued, bankruptcy was just around the corner.
“President Shen, someone must be behind this. There’s no other explanation for why we can’t suppress it.”
The assistant spoke cautiously, but Shen Ruizhang’s face only darkened further.
“You think I don’t know someone’s targeting me? The problem is, the PR team I pay so much for can’t even handle our enemies!”
He was even angrier after saying this.
Just as the assistant was about to say more, the secretary hurried in, her face tense. “President Shen, someone has reported irregularities in our company’s accounts!”
Shen Ruizhang’s gaze sharpened. “Who?”
“We don’t know, but the police are already at the front entrance.”
No sooner had she finished speaking than several officers appeared in the office.
“President Shen.”
Shen Ruizhang pressed his lips together and shook hands with them politely.
Before he could say anything, the lead officer got straight to the point: “President Shen, there are suspicions that your company has evaded taxes. Would you please come with us?”
A flicker of uncertainty passed through Shen Ruizhang’s eyes. “There must be some misunderstanding, but I have nothing to hide. I’m not afraid of any investigation.”
The two officers exchanged a glance and then escorted Shen Ruizhang away.
The moment employees saw him being led out, chaos erupted in the company.
Meanwhile, Old Madam Shen was in the hospital watching the news, only to see footage of her son being taken away by the police. Her pupils contracted violently.
“How could this be? How could this happen? How could Ruizhang do such a thing? There must be a mistake!”
Her trembling hand reached for the phone to get answers, but just as she dialed, she fainted.
Jiang Yunzhu also received news of Shen Ruizhang’s detainment. When Old Madam Shen’s number flashed on her phone and she answered, there was only silence on the other end.
Panic-stricken, she rushed to the hospital.
When she arrived, the nurse explained the situation.
“Old Madam Shen’s condition had stabilized, but she seems to have suffered a shock today, and her health has deteriorated.”
Jiang Yunzhu began to tremble all over.
“Grandmother will be fine—she must be!”
Her face was pale as she waited outside the operating room all night. Only when Old Madam Shen was wheeled out did she rush forward to ask the surgeon, “Doctor, how is my grandmother?”
“She’s out of danger, but if she suffers another shock like this, not even the greatest doctor could save her.”
Jiang Yunzhu stayed at the hospital to watch over her until her phone rang and she was called away.
While two nurses came in to change Old Madam Shen’s dressings, they chatted idly as they worked.
“I think the old lady’s daughter-in-law is quite devoted—she’s been here all along.”
The other nurse scoffed, “Devoted? She’s probably the one behind all those online scandals. Otherwise, why hasn’t she spoken up for President Shen? If she had, he might not have been taken away.”
“People like her—acting all sweet in front and scheming behind your back. No wonder women who marry into wealthy families are never simple.”
After the nurses left, Old Madam Shen slowly opened her eyes.
Jiang Yunzhu entered and, seeing that Old Madam Shen was awake, hurried to her side.
“Grandmother, how are you feeling?”
But Old Madam Shen looked at Jiang Yunzhu with nothing but disappointment. Jiang Yunzhu was at a loss, worried something was wrong, and quickly called for the attending physician.
