Chapter 90: Being Followed
Qiao Wan’er sat helplessly in her chair, wracked with regret for not having the foresight to preserve evidence back then. Nervously, she tugged at Lu Yao’s sleeve, suppressing her anger as she whispered, “What should we do?”
Lu Yao did not reply; instead, she calmly took a USB drive from her briefcase and slid it across the table to Brother Wang. With an unhurried air, she said, “Officer Wang, please deliver this USB to the superior you mentioned. Make sure she watches it before deciding whether to issue the arrest warrant.”
Brother Wang eyed the USB in confusion, unable to fathom why Lu Yao was providing evidence in two stages. Nevertheless, he followed her instructions and brought it to the supervisor’s office.
The supervisor frowned as he entered, displeased. “You again?”
Brother Wang replied nervously, “Brother Lu, Lawyer Lu asked me to hand this USB to you personally. She said you should watch it and then decide about the arrest warrant.”
Brother Lu took the USB and plugged it into the computer. As he opened the video, a familiar female voice echoed from the speakers, startling him so much that he quickly closed the file. He urged Brother Wang, “Go outside first. I’ll give you an answer once I’ve finished watching.”
Brother Wang had hoped to stay and see what the evidence was, but before he could crane his neck for a glimpse, he was ushered out.
Once the door closed, Brother Lu reopened the video.
On screen appeared Ye Hua conversing with four masked men. Though the setting was dim, their faces were strikingly clear.
He hurriedly dialed Ye Hua’s number.
“Miss Ye, Lu Yao gave me a video, I’ve forwarded it to you. Please watch it and let me know whether to approve the arrests.”
“Lu Yao, that meddlesome woman. She haunts me like a ghost,” Ye Hua muttered as she opened the video. When she saw her own face, crisp and unmistakable, her expression darkened instantly. Her hand clenched into a fist, slamming the desk in fury. Between gritted teeth, she spat out, “Approve.”
Lu Yao again! She would not let this go!
Brother Lu deleted the video after viewing it, then issued orders approving the arrest of the four masked men.
When Qiao Wan’er received the news, she was overjoyed, throwing herself into Lu Yao’s arms in an ecstatic embrace. “Lu Yao, I knew choosing you was the right decision!”
Lu Yao, caught off guard by such intimacy from her rival, stiffly stepped back. “Miss Qiao, as I said, this is the last time I’ll help you. Please keep your promise.”
“You’re such a killjoy,” Qiao Wan’er pouted, raising her chin with her usual pride. “You may have solved my scandal, but I won’t hand Ze Hong over to you. From today, it's fair competition between us.”
Lu Yao smiled serenely, meeting Qiao Wan’er’s gaze. “I am the one who is loved. There is no competition between us.”
“You…”
How could she be so confident?
Qiao Wan’er was left speechless. She knew full well Lu Yao’s confidence came from being favored.
With Qiao Wan’er’s case resolved, Lu Yao didn’t linger and set off for home. As she walked through a secluded alley, she sensed someone following her. To test her suspicion, she deliberately took a few detours.
Finally, at a corner, she spun around unexpectedly, catching her pursuer off guard.
Before her stood a man dressed in black, wearing a hat, sunglasses, and a black mask.
She asked, “You’ve been following me for two or three days now. What is your purpose?”
The man slowly removed his mask and sunglasses.
When Lu Yao saw his face, she involuntarily stepped back, fear etched across her features. “It’s you!”
