Chapter 116: The Diamond Ring
“Ze Hong, investigate everything about Sun Ying. You handle it.”
Ye Yingtang had been navigating the underworld for over a decade and could easily tell that Ye Zemo had been framed. Those who dared to target the Ye family must have prepared thoroughly; they wouldn’t be so easy to deal with.
Anyone who dared to mess with the Ye family would never be tolerated.
However, in recent years, he had become less ruthless and preferred to wield the law as his weapon.
This was also why he chose Lu Yao.
Lu Yao, both in temperament and character, was filled with a sense of justice.
Ye Zehong raised an eyebrow and nodded slightly; he had already intended to do so.
Ye Hua frowned, displeasure clearly visible in her eyes.
She glanced anxiously at Ye Zehong and said, “Father, why don’t I handle the investigation? After all, I’m the third brother’s biological sister—it would be more appropriate for me to take care of this.”
Ye Yingtang looked at Ye Hua coldly for a long moment before saying, “I feel more at ease leaving it to Zehong. Your most important task now is to take good care of your mother.”
Ye Hua pressed her lips together and replied indifferently, “Alright.”
With Ye Zemo’s incident, the welcome banquet came to an abrupt end.
Lu Yao planned to go to the police station alone. Just as she arrived at the underground parking lot and was about to reach for the car door handle, her arm was grabbed. She turned to look, and when her eyes met the deep, dark ones like a tranquil pool, she relaxed.
He led her to the front passenger seat of his car. “I’ll accompany you. It’ll be safer.”
“Alright.”
Lu Yao reached out to fasten her seatbelt, but before she could, a warm hand covered the back of hers.
She felt as though her hand had been scalded and instinctively pulled back.
Such a small movement made him lift his gaze to look at her, his expression darkening instantly.
“Are you really that averse to my touch?”
His tone was clearly tinged with anger.
Lu Yao lowered her eyes, a faint, bitter smile appearing on her face.
Softly, she explained, “It’s just an instinctive reaction, like when your body avoids scalding hot water. It’s not as complicated as you think.”
In other words, he was being overly sensitive.
Ye Zehong realized this, and a barely noticeable glint, mixed with a hint of regret, surfaced in his deep eyes.
Since when had he become so anxious and uncertain around Lu Yao?
“When you have time, please arrange for me to get a detailed account of Ye Hua’s funds,” Lu Yao glanced at him shyly. Seeing his tightly clenched jaw and clearly low spirits, she changed the subject.
“You’re so eager to investigate Ye Hua—is it because you want to uncover the truth quickly? So you can then…,” Ye Zehong turned his head slightly, his hand tightening on the steering wheel as he frowned, “go back together with Zhou Luoxi?”
Lu Yao was taken aback, a flicker of unease crossing her eyes.
After uncovering the truth and punishing those who harmed her and her mother years ago, she indeed should leave this place full of painful memories.
As for who she would leave with—
She did not care.
Lu Yao glanced sideways at his stern profile and murmured, “If I said yes, would you still give me the details of Ye Hua’s funds?”
Of course, he wouldn’t.
But he knew well that even if he refused, she would find a way to get them.
Ye Zehong frowned slightly. “I’ve already arranged for someone to compile everything. It will be sent to your email later. The physical documents will be delivered to your new office.”
Lu Yao was slightly surprised. She hadn’t expected him to prepare it so readily.
“Thank you…”
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a strangely shaped box placed in the middle. Curious, she picked it up and asked, “What’s this?”
As she spoke, she opened the box. Inside lay a lotus-shaped diamond ring.
Her breath caught, and a wave of panic swept through her heart.
