Lu Yao instinctively tried to support herself with her hands, hoping to avoid falling into the shards of glass on the floor. Fortunately, Ye Yingtang was standing close and reached out to pull her toward him. It was thanks to Ye Yingtang’s regular office golf and fitness routines, aside from managing Ye Group’s affairs, that he was able to hold onto the tall and slender Lu Yao.

Steadying herself, Lu Yao dared not move an inch, afraid a careless step might make her brush against the glass.

Ye Zehong, having just witnessed the perilous scene, was about to rush over to rescue Lu Yao when, unexpectedly, Ye Yingtang extended a hand to help her, finally putting his mind at ease.

Yang Lan and Ye Hua had barely revealed expressions of schadenfreude when, in the next second, they saw Ye Yingtang disregard his own safety to save Lu Yao, and could only grit their teeth in frustration.

They had wanted Lu Yao to make a fool of herself in public, never expecting that they would end up the clowns instead.

The audience watched Ye Yingtang play the hero for Lu Yao and immediately understood her standing within the Ye Group.

It was clear to all that Lu Yao was an even more important figure than Mrs. Ye or the eldest Miss Ye.

The hostess, pale with fright, hurried to apologize. “President Ye, I’m so sorry, I didn’t do it on purpose. Someone pushed me just now, I wasn’t prepared at all, so I bumped into Lawyer Lu. I’m really sorry.”

Lu Yao glanced at Yang Lan and Ye Hua standing behind the hostess and immediately understood.

It was obvious that Yang Lan and her daughter were the culprits behind this.

Not wanting to implicate an innocent person, Lu Yao pleaded with Ye Yingtang, “President Ye, today is my welcome banquet. I don’t want to make a scene—please don’t blame this young woman.”

Ye Yingtang was an old hand in the business world and naturally saw who was behind the mischief. He shot a cold glare at Ye Hua, then waved his hand for the staff to clean up the mess.

“Lu Yao, I owe you for failing to give you a perfect welcome banquet.” Ye Yingtang gently patted her shoulder, apologizing. “I’ll grant you one request—anything within my power, you may ask.”

Lu Yao’s eyes brightened. She did not refuse. “President Ye, there is indeed something I wish to ask your permission for.”

“Oh? And what is it?”

“I’d like to conduct a thorough audit of all of Ye Group’s internal accounts, including those of the subsidiaries and shareholders.”

At these words, Ye Hua immediately jumped up to object. “Impossible! You’re just a newly appointed legal officer—how dare you think you can look over Ye Group’s internal accounts? Who do you think you are?”

The color drained from Yang Lan’s face. She’d suspected all along that Lu Yao’s approach to the Ye family was not pure.

When Ye Zehong’s dark eyes met Lu Yao’s clear gaze, his expression instantly grew worried.

Ye Zema, on the other hand, didn’t think too much into it and exclaimed, “Lawyer Lu, you really are incisive. You know that to grasp the entirety of Ye Group’s situation, you have to start with the internal accounts.”

Lu Yao smiled faintly. Seeing Ye Yingtang deep in thought and slow to respond, she quickly added, “President Ye, forgive me for my boldness. You may, of course, refuse such an unreasonable request.”

“I never go back on my word,” Ye Yingtang replied. He looked to Ye Zehong, his expression grave. “Assist Lu Yao with whatever internal accounts she needs.”

“All right, I’ll give her my full cooperation,” Ye Zehong replied in a low voice.

Ye Zehong also served as the CFO of Ye Group, overseeing all financial operations.

Yang Lan stared at Ye Yingtang in disbelief, unable to comprehend how he could agree to Lu Yao’s request. This was a privilege that even Ye Hua and Ye Zema could not touch.

She refused to remain silent and stepped forward to protest. “Darling, giving such crucial information to Miss Lu is most inappropriate. Never mind what Miss Lu wants with these documents—don’t you think this is reckless?”
