Chapter 091: An Oddball and a Chatterbox
“But we haven’t seen the international driving permit you mentioned.” Li Xuemin had no particular fondness for this obviously spoiled rich kid, and said with a stern face, “In any case, we can’t find any record of you having obtained a driver’s license in this country. So your situation counts as driving without a license, and drunk driving without a license at that. For that, you can be detained for up to fifteen days!”
“Hey! You’re getting bold with me, are you? Do you know who my father is? Do you know who my mother is? Do you know who my sister is?” Qin Han glared.
“I don’t care who they are. Once you break the law, you have to face the law’s punishment!” Li Xuemin said coldly.
“Officer Li, don’t get angry. This kid obviously spent too long overseas and doesn’t understand how things work here.” Lin Feng hurried to smooth things over, pulling Li Xuemin aside and lowering his voice. “Officer Li, see if there’s a better way to handle this. We can’t really have him detained, can we?”
“It’s not that he absolutely has to be detained. It’s mostly that this kid is too arrogant; I can’t stand him!” Li Xuemin was still quite polite to Lin Feng, and said quietly, “His case can be treated as serious or minor. As long as it isn’t reported to the public security authorities, detention isn’t necessary, but the vehicle has to be impounded and the fine has to be paid.”
“No problem with any of that, as long as I can take him with me.” Lin Feng let out a breath of relief.
As the two were talking, another female traffic officer walked into the office. “Brother Li, I found Qin Han’s international driving permit. He really did obtain it in the United States.”
“See? See? I told you I had an international driving permit, and you still didn’t believe me. A bunch of bumpkins!” Qin Han immediately grew animated when he heard the officer had found his driving information.
“Say one more word!” Lin Feng shot him a hard glare, then said to Li Xuemin, “Officer Li, since you’ve already confirmed that he does have an international driving permit, shouldn’t that make things a lot simpler?”
Li Xuemin glanced at Qin Han, truly looking down on this sort of rich second-generation playboy.
“Lin Feng, if you hadn’t stepped in today, I’d have given this brat a proper lesson!” Li Xuemin led Lin Feng out of the office. “The paperwork’s already done. Just go pay the fine. The car will be impounded, and he can come to the traffic police brigade in a week to pick it up.”
“All right, thanks, Officer Li.”
Lin Feng took the slip to pay the fine, then led Qin Han out of the traffic police brigade.
“I really didn’t expect my sister to like your type,” Qin Han said after they left the gate.
“I didn’t expect Ruolin to have a brother like you either.” Lin Feng rolled his eyes at him. He didn’t have much fondness for these privileged second-generation heirs either, especially since the first time they met, this guy had caused him such a huge headache.
“What did I do? You’re not jealous of how handsome I am, are you?” Qin Han said with shameless self-satisfaction.
“All right, you actually got that right.” Lin Feng shrugged helplessly.
“Actually, you don’t look bad either! You should be more confident!” Qin Han said very seriously.
Lin Feng was completely speechless. This guy was absurdly self-absorbed; he couldn’t even tell when people were joking.
“Where are you going? I can call you a cab,” Lin Feng asked.
“Of course I’m going wherever you’re going,” Qin Han said.
“What?” Lin Feng looked at him in frustration. “Why would you follow me instead of going home?”
“I sneaked back from overseas. Of course I can’t go home!” Qin Han spread his hands. “Originally I wanted to find my sister, but her phone’s been unreachable the whole time. She must be on a plane; who knows where she’s flown off to. So I can only follow you for now. Who told you to be my brother-in-law?”
Lin Feng was speechless again. So this was a human pest of the highest order.
“Then where did the car you were driving come from?” he asked.
“A friend’s. But he already flew to Hainan this afternoon for a vacation.” Qin Han took a cigarette from his pocket, lit one for himself, then offered one to Lin Feng. “Smoke?”
“No.” Lin Feng shook his head.
“A man who doesn’t smoke is actually pretty rare!” Qin Han laughed, then exhaled a ring of smoke and asked, “By the way, how old are you? You and I seem about the same age. If you’re younger than me, I’ll have to call you little brother-in-law.”
“You don’t need to call me brother-in-law or little brother-in-law. Just call me by my name,” Lin Feng said.
“Fine.” Qin Han puffed on his cigarette and said, “Lin Feng, I heard you’re the Most Valuable Player in the finals of the Chinese Basketball Association. Let’s have a one-on-one match sometime. I want to see what kind of level a Chinese Basketball Association finals MVP really has.”
“You play basketball too?” Lin Feng looked at Qin Han in surprise. If anyone said this guy was a basketball player, Lin Feng would never believe it.
“Looking down on me?” Qin Han said smugly. “Do you know Duke University, the champion of American college basketball?”
“Of course. A lot of the superstars in the American professional league came from that university.” Lin Feng asked in astonishment, “You went to Duke?”
“No.” Qin Han shook his head. “Our university was in the same regional bracket as Duke. Our school team only lost to Duke by five points.”
Lin Feng gave a soft “Oh.” “That’s pretty impressive. So you were on the school team?”
“No.” Qin Han shook his head again. “Our school team played against our department team, and our department basketball team only lost by six.”
“Then you were on the department team?” Lin Feng asked patiently.
This time Qin Han finally nodded, but then added two words: “Bench player.”
“Damn it!”
Lin Feng couldn’t help cursing. Damn it, you’re just a bench player on some third-rate university department team, and you’re bringing up Duke University?
“Fine, fine, you’re impressive enough, okay?” Lin Feng’s face was the picture of speechlessness.
“Just keep it in your heart; no need to say it out loud,” Qin Han said with satisfaction as he smoked. “I heard the level in the Chinese Basketball Association is pretty low, so maybe your finals MVP title really wouldn’t be enough to beat me.”
“Mm.” Lin Feng nodded. “What you say makes a lot of sense. I probably can’t beat a bench player from your department team...”
“See? You do have some self-awareness. Let me tell you, don’t look down on me just because I’m only a bench player on the department team. We still have professional training every day. In our last game against the school team, I just didn’t get on the court. If I had played, who knows who would have won? And last month our school held a three-point contest. I made it into the round of sixteen. Do you know who the champion was? That guy was in the American college league...”
Lin Feng had never imagined that Qin Han was not only arrogant and self-admiring, but also a nonstop chatterbox.
“Hey, could you stop for a second?” Lin Feng really couldn’t take it anymore and cut him off.
“Something wrong?” Qin Han looked at him unhappily.
“Nothing much. I just want to ask: are you done bragging? If you are, then we should get a cab and go. It’s almost one o’clock!” Lin Feng said, then headed straight to the roadside to hail a car.
“Hey, what kind of attitude is that...”
