Chapter Sixty-Nine: Slaying the Northern Plains Bear Mat
Seeing this scene, Tos and Toma gasped in shock. “Chu Han, I must not be mistaken, am I? You’re only at the peak of the Heavenly Palace stage, so how are you unleashing such immense power? This shouldn’t be possible!”
“Haha, I’m not like ordinary people. Don’t worry, I won’t hold you back. When we take care of the Northern Bear, you can avenge yourselves as you wish, do whatever you need to do. As for the rare herbs and treasures on the mountain, I’ll claim them all.”
Chu Han laughed heartily. Their astonished expressions only showed respect for his true identity as a Celestial Lord. Tos and Toma quickly agreed. The two of them alone found it difficult to handle the Northern Bear, but with the addition of someone as monstrously strong as Chu Han, their chances of victory increased significantly.
Meanwhile, the princess was still unconscious on the ground. Chu Han had already asked Tos, who explained that he’d used some strange method to render her unconscious. She would likely need another day to wake. In truth, this was for the best; once he dealt with the Northern Bear, he could escort the princess back to the Eastern Wilds.
The night passed in silence.
At dawn, Chu Han accompanied the two beasts toward the mountain where the Northern Bear resided. Before setting out, he sealed the cave entrance with true energy to prevent other magical beasts from intruding and harming the princess.
After traveling with the two beasts for over an hour, guided by Tos, Chu Han finally saw a small mountain peak in the distance. Even before they drew near, he caught a rich aroma of medicinal herbs in the air—clearly, this was their destination.
The three quickly discussed their battle plan. Tos and Toma would attack from the front while Chu Han would remain hidden, waiting for the right moment to deliver a fatal blow to the Northern Bear. Once the strategy was set, Tos and Toma charged up the mountain, while Chu Han cloaked himself in true energy and slipped into the forest.
Upon reaching the summit, Chu Han concealed himself behind a large boulder. What met his eyes was a massive creature sleeping atop the mountain. Its body was pure white, and its bulk dwarfed Tos and Toma combined. An aura of chilling cold pervaded the area, making Chu Han distinctly uncomfortable.
“Mate, old man is here! How dare you try to harm me! Today, I’ll take your life!” Tos and Toma had both reverted to their true forms, each bearing two huge horns—one brown, one white—cutting a strange and intimidating figure. Though both were large, they were still dwarfed by the Northern Bear.
Their voices were thunderous, rousing the Northern Bear from its sleep. It rose, displeased to see Tos and Toma. “What are you doing here? It’s not time to collect herbs until afternoon! Get out of my sight before I lose my temper!” The bear’s voice was deep and resonant, but Chu Han could hear the anger within it. It seemed this lumbering beast was also prone to morning irritability. The oppressive aura made Chu Han’s body tremble. He quickly took out his jade pendant and hung it around his neck, feeling much better at once.
He had tested it yesterday; the jade pendant could shield him from the beasts’ pressure. Without it, he wouldn’t have been able to move under the combined auras of Tos and Toma. He owed much to this pendant.
“Mate, you useless brute, you tried to poison me with frost venom! If I hadn’t discovered it in time, I’d already be dead! You’re still so arrogant? We’re here today to make you pay!” Tos shouted, taking up a flanking position with Toma to encircle the Northern Bear, ready to strike at any moment.
Their movements closely resembled those of wolves—creatures known for strategizing before a hunt and capturing their prey through cunning. This was what made wolf packs so fearsome.
“Haha, so you noticed? Not bad. But even so, what can you do to me? With just the two of you, you’re no match for me!” With a roar, the bear charged, its immense power making the ground tremble. Its icy aura condensed the surrounding air into droplets.
Tos and Toma, far from cowards, sprang into action the instant the bear attacked. They deftly dodged, circled behind, and raked its back with their massive claws.
However, to the Northern Bear, their assault was nothing more than a tickle. With a howl, it spun around and smashed Tos with a heavy paw. Despite its bulk, the bear moved with surprising agility and speed. Tos was caught off guard and sent flying, crashing to the ground with a scream, blood pouring from his mouth.
Such was the difference between a sixth-rank magical beast and those of the fifth rank; even two against one, the bear was overwhelmingly dominant, injuring one of its foes with ease. It was as if a single warrior was standing against an entire army.
Normally, Tos and Toma would have been defeated for sure, but today, with Chu Han’s help, the outcome would be different. At this moment, the bear’s back was fully exposed to him—his best opportunity to strike.
Tos and Toma stared at him in shock. They hadn’t expected the gap between their strength and the bear’s to be so vast. Usually, they were confident, but now they hesitated.
“Qilin!” Chu Han stood from behind the boulder, shouting as he raised his right hand to the sky. Lightning gathered around his hand, coalescing into the form of a Qilin—a divine beast—its size now rivaling that of the Northern Bear.
This attack was recorded in the Five Thunder Sage’s legacy—a thunderbeast technique that could unleash the full might of lightning. Among its more advanced forms was the Qilin strike.
At that moment, the Northern Bear’s back was still to him, unaware of what was happening behind. The Qilin, wreathed in lightning, roared as it struck the bear’s back. The bear let out a miserable scream, its fur already singed.
Paralyzed by the lightning, the bear was unable to move. The Qilin’s attack tore a massive hole in its back, blood gushing forth. The bear collapsed, turning its head just as Chu Han began to gather more lightning.
“A human? Mate, you’re working with a human now? How impressive you’ve become! Damn human, you dare strike at the great Northern Bear—this will be your death day!”
Struggling to rise, the bear tried to kill Chu Han, but his next attack was already prepared.
“Thunder Serpent!”
At his command, the lightning transformed into a giant python that shot toward the Northern Bear, wrapping tightly around its body. The immense strength and paralyzing electricity left the bear completely immobilized.
The bear howled and struggled, but it was all in vain. Lightning was the natural nemesis of ice. Paralyzed, the bear couldn’t muster a tenth of its true strength.
At this point, Tos and Toma had recovered, realizing what they needed to do. They lunged forward, biting into the bear’s wounded flesh and tearing away a chunk. The bear shrieked in agony, blood flowing freely.
“Tos, Toma, spare me! I know I was wrong before. Just let me go, and I’ll give you anything you want!” The bear, sensing its life was forfeit, begged for mercy as it mustered its strength. In just a few minutes, it might break free from the Thunder Serpent’s grasp, so it tried to stall for time.
