Chapter Ninety-One: Visiting the House of the Marquis of Loyal Courage
Song Ruki sneezed twice and rubbed her feverish ears. Could it be that those aristocratic ladies who had always been at odds with her were whispering ill of her behind her back?
Ha. In the past, she had not feared them; now that she was the cherished daughter of the prime minister’s household, she feared them even less.
Turning her head, Song Ruki looked at her cousin, who was keeping her little face taut, and said, “Stop looking so tense. What are you nervous about? Just follow my lead.”
Song Ruwei gave her a smile, a little shyly. “Second Sister, this is my first time visiting another household since returning to the capital. I was afraid I might do something wrong and embarrass you.”
“This is my maternal grandmother’s home, not some other estate. There’s no need to be nervous. Still, it is good that you care.” Song Ruki was quite pleased with her cousin’s tact and good sense.
“Cousin Qi.”
A clear voice called out.
The two sisters looked over and saw a girl of fourteen or fifteen standing there, bright and pretty. She wore a spring robe of silver-red silk, her delicate face lightly touched with powder, her hair arranged in a graceful flying-immortal style, and a hairpin set with red and blue gemstones. She was both charming and poised.
This was the hostess of the day, the eldest legitimate daughter of the Marquis of Loyalty and Courage’s household, Gu Ruoning, fourteen years of age and raised by the Marquis’s Grand Dowager Lady herself.
“Cousin Ruoning.”
With a smiling face, Song Ruki stepped forward and took Gu Ruoning’s hand. The two of them bent their knees in mutual courtesy.
“I’ve been waiting for you for ages, Cousin Qi. Sister Anyan and the others are already here, chatting and playing pitch-pot by the waterside pavilion,” Gu Ruoning said with a smile.
Song Ruki chided her fondly. “I’m not some other guest. Why should you wait here for me? Couldn’t I have found my own way over?”
Gu Ruoning stuck out her tongue. “I was only anxious.”
As she spoke, she looked at Song Ruwei beside her and asked, “And this must be Sister Ruwei?”
“Yes. She’s my third uncle’s daughter. She just returned from Shanxi not long ago, and I brought her here to visit the marquis’s residence.” Song Ruki drew Song Ruwei over and introduced her to Gu Ruoning. “This is my cousin, Gu Ruoning. Call her Elder Sister.”
Song Ruwei obediently curtseyed. “Ruwei greets Sister Ruoning. I wish Sister Ruoning a happy birthday and everlasting youth. I came without invitation, and beg your pardon if I am a trouble.”
Gu Ruoning laughed, taking Song Ruwei’s hand. “I’m delighted that you came; how could I possibly mind? Don’t be so formal. Since you are my cousin’s sister, you are my sister too. You’re really quite well-mannered.”
Song Ruwei smiled shyly.
Song Ruki was very satisfied with her cousin’s performance. Looking at Gu Ruoning, she said, “Let’s not stand here talking. I should go and pay my respects to Grandmother first.”
Gu Ruoning immediately said, “I’ll take you there. Grandmother has been thinking of you for a long time.”
Song Ruki nodded and let Gu Ruoning link arms with her as they headed toward Madam Gu’s Hall of Peace and Ease.
When the group arrived, Madam Gu happened to be free. Seeing Song Ruki, she drew her close and called her all manner of darling names, then bestowed a jeweled necklace ring on Song Ruwei as a greeting gift. After inquiring after Song Ci, she finally let them go.
Having paid their respects to Madam Gu, Song Ruki next went to greet Gu Ruoning’s mother, the current Marchioness of Loyalty and Courage, Lady Gu Luo, and naturally the sisters received another set of greeting gifts.
“You young ladies go and amuse yourselves. I won’t meddle. Ruoning, you must take good care of your cousins,” the marchioness said with a smile.
Gu Ruoning said, “Mother, you still don’t trust me? I’ll be sure to make Cousin and the others feel at home.”
“Then off you go.”
Just as they were about to leave, an maid lifted the curtain and said, “Madam, Young Master Luo has come to pay his respects to you.”
Song Ruki’s steps faltered, and she looked toward the Marchioness.
