When Lu Wenzhen was alive, she had a very close friend named Ren Huifang. Ren Huifang was also the godmother of Lu Mingyue. When Lu Mingyue was a child, she was often ill, and secretly someone was consulted who said that only by having a godmother could her health improve. Ren Huifang was the perfect choice. Unfortunately, after Lu Wenzhen passed away, the original owner, under the pressure of Meng Mancang, severed all contact with her. At first, Ren Huifang would secretly send her gifts, but the original owner was timid and fearful, only hiding at school and refusing to come out when troubles arose. Ren Huifang thought that the original owner had grown distant from her, so over time, she stopped reaching out. Before the original owner’s consciousness faded, she asked Ren Huifang to visit her godmother and apologize in person.
About to leave this place, Lu Mingyue didn’t want the original owner to have any regrets. She wanted to change into something a bit more formal.
Hmm...
After glancing at the wardrobe, she decided to wear the outfit she had on and planned to buy new clothes after she returned.
She prepared some homemade snacks and also bought canned malted milk from the supply and marketing cooperative to take along. After receiving her money order, she straightened her back as she entered the cooperative. The staff recognized her and, seeing that she had bought a lot of things, thought it was on Tian Xiaojü’s behalf, so they kindly helped pack her purchases.
Following the remembered directions, Lu Mingyue quickly found the place. Ren Huifang’s husband was a military dependent and worked at a nearby base.
Lu Mingyue arrived at the family housing gate and explained her purpose to the sentry, who then made a call. Soon after, Ren Huifang received the message and hurried over. She was both surprised and delighted.
She hadn’t been in contact with Lu Mingyue for several years and didn’t know why the girl had come to see her.
“Godmother.”
Lu Mingyue smiled gently, and the familiar face instantly brought back memories of the days when Ren Huifang and Lu Wenzhen first met. Before becoming Lu Mingyue’s godmother, Ren Huifang was already a close school friend of Lu Wenzhen. They met in middle school and maintained a strong bond; even when Lu Wenzhen went to university, they kept in touch through letters without interruption.
When Lu Mingyue was born, Ren Huifang told Lu Wenzhen she wanted to be her goddaughter. Later, when Lu Mingyue had health issues, they realized that a mere verbal agreement was not enough; it needed to be formalized through a ceremony.
However it happened, by fate or chance, they remained the closest of sisters. When Lu Wenzhen died, Ren Huifang nearly fainted from grief and silently vowed to treat Lu Mingyue as her own child. But for some reason, Mingyue would run away whenever she saw her.

Not understanding why, Ren Huifang confronted Meng Mancang and learned that he forbade Lu Mingyue from contacting her. To avoid putting the girl in a difficult position, Ren Huifang reluctantly suppressed her pain and gradually distanced herself.
Only God knows how thrilled she was when she heard Lu Mingyue had come.
“Mingyue, why are you here?”
Lu Mingyue felt a sting in her eyes, likely because her original body still reacted to her.
“Godmother, I missed you.”
Seeing the faded clothes on her, Ren Huifang understood just how harshly Meng Mancang had treated her all these years. She grasped Lu Mingyue’s hands tenderly, filled with regret that she hadn’t stood her ground and kept the child close, even if it meant binding her. As a godmother, she felt she was a hundred times better than Meng Mancang, the cold-hearted biological father.
“Good child, let’s go home.”
“Godmother, I’m sorry.”
Tears streamed down Lu Mingyue’s cheeks, making Ren Huifang’s heart ache even more. “Don’t say that, it’s my fault.”
Lu Mingyue shook her head; neither of them was at fault—it was Meng Mancang’s wrongdoing.
Watching her godmother wipe away her tears, warmth blossomed in Lu Mingyue’s chest. She was grateful her godmother was willing to forgive her.
Ren Huifang feigned irritation, “Why buy all these things just to bring them home?”
Only after saying it did she realize it might sound strange—would Mingyue think she was truly upset?
Lu Mingyue was oblivious. She was conversing with the system.
[System, was what you just said true?]
[Of course it’s true.]
Where was that voice coming from?
Ren Huifang perked up her ears, listened carefully, and confirmed one voice was Lu Mingyue’s.
System: [Ren Huifang could have enjoyed a peaceful old age, but because her daughter Su Miao invited a wolf into the house, all their family assets were swindled by a scoundrel. Worse still, she was accused of treason, and the whole family was sent to the far northwest and never returned.]
Lu Mingyue: [Is that true? Didn’t anyone investigate Su Miao’s marriage partner?]
System: [That’s simple. Since the man dared to get close to a military dependent, he must have had everything meticulously planned and a spotless background. But there are ways to deal with it; the man has a hideout.]
[Where?]
System chuckled, [That requires the host to complete a task.]
Lu Mingyue: ...
Damn system, just knew it wouldn’t be that easy.
[The task is very simple. The host only needs to help Ren Huifang prepare dinner today.]
[That simple?]

System: [Yes, our system spans multiple dimensions, mostly involving apocalyptic missions. Over there, conditions are harsh, so just a bit of food or the aroma of a meal can complete a task. It’s very friendly for beginners!]
Lu Mingyue suddenly felt the system wasn’t so bad and reluctantly refrained from complaining.
“Mingyue, don’t go back tonight. Stay here a few more days.”
Lu Mingyue’s eyes brightened. Just when she was about to doze off, someone brought her a pillow—that feeling was wonderful!
“Okay, I’d like to spend more time with you, but I might have to leave in a day or two.”
“Leave here? Where to?”
Ren Huifang grew anxious. Could it be that another voice was influencing her?
Lu Mingyue told her about her impending marriage and relocation with the military.
Ren Huifang, upon hearing the whole story, cursed Meng Xiaoling fiercely.
“Mingyue, we’ll make things clear with that person. You’re still young and don’t need to rush to marry. When the time comes, move in with godmother—we’ll live together.”
Lu Mingyue smiled faintly, “Thank you, godmother. Don’t worry, I’m no longer a child and will take responsibility for my actions.”
Unable to dissuade her, Ren Huifang said if she ever felt wronged, she should come back. Mingyue would always be her child.
[Godmother is a good person. Too bad neither of the two children is easy to handle.]
Ren Huifang paused.
Lu Mingyue stayed until afternoon, frequently glancing toward the kitchen.
Ren Huifang checked the clock; it was almost time to get off work. She stood and prepared to cook.
Seeing this, Lu Mingyue followed her, “Godmother, let me help.”
Ren Huifang, recalling the strange conversation, smiled and agreed.
She expected just words but was surprised when Lu Mingyue actually made a full spread of dishes. Most of the food was prepared by Lu Mingyue, leaving Ren Huifang to assist.
“Mingyue, you’re amazing. Just looking at these dishes lifts my spirits.”
Lu Mingyue put her hands on her hips proudly. This was why she had chosen to be a food blogger—she loved eating and cooking, and cooking always helped her forget life’s hardships.
“Godfather and the others should be back soon.”
Ren Huifang took off her apron, “I’ll go check.”
As she reached the living room, a voice came from outside.
“Mom, I’m home.”
